Johnnyboy is a 14-year old sensitive, handsome, sadly illiterate part Indian fleeing his physically abusive father and his helpless but loving Cherokee Mama. Seeking his place in the universe first on his own two feet, later as a hitchhiker, he encounters Chief, a wise old Indian who sees into his soul and with the help of hallucinogenic mescal, leads him toward a new identity. This book is a road trip peppered with people both kind and wise as well as evil and ignorant. Valuable lessons, both occult and temporal produce.a tense denouement and a poignant climax as the solitary young man survives incredible hardships and accepts the gifts of the people who touch his life. Because this is a memoir, Mr. Atkinson allows his writing style to evolve and mature as his young man's powers of observation expand. We feel gratitude for his talent and are eager for more.

A wonderful story, beautifully told with quite a cast of interesting characters. At times you'll cry for Johnnyboy and other times you'll cheer him on. Although this story covers a short span of his life, you can't help but think everything's gonna turn out all right. Get it and read it!
Johnnyboy's coming of age struggle is like nothing you've heard before. This memoir will circle in your mind endlessly in a reassuring, pleasurable way. Tight, masculine writing style that goes straight to the heart and never wastes a word. Native American scenes are right on and Chet is a dog you'll remember as you do your own. This book launches a great talent.
